Origami started in the 17th century in Japan. It makes geometric folds on a piece of paper to make different objects. It basically uses small folding patterns.

In the earlier Japanese days, origami was given as gifts or good luck tokens in ceremonies. Origami has come a very long way since this then. It is now considered an international art. And a million different patterns have already been created throughout the world.

Origami is like practical geometry, with paper as the basic material. Any parallel material can be used for folding. A normal paper for simple folds can weigh 70-90 g/m² or 19 to 24 pounds. Heavy paper of 100g/m² can be wet-folded. The technique allows a rounded sculpting of its replica which becomes firm when dried.

There is a Japanese paper called kami which is lighter than a copy paper. It is sold in prepackaged sizes of squares that range from 2.5 centimeters to 25 cm. The two sides have white and colored versions that can be used for changing model colors.

A foil-backed paper is another option. It is a thin sheet foil glued to a thin sheet of paper just like a tissue foil in the market. It should be handmade to make it suitable for complex models.

Washi is another kind of paper in Japan used for origami. It is tougher than an ordinary paper. Washi is made from gampi tree wood pulp used in traditional arts.

Another strong paper used in insect models is the artisan paper such as lokta, kozo, unryu, hanji and saa. They have thin long fibers and often back-coated with methylcellulose (wheat paste) before folding.

Paper money is also a popular material in making origami. It is commonly called moneygami. Some prefer to use folding bone like nails to aid with creasing and sharpening the edges while folding.

The most well known form of origami is the paper crane. It begins with a square sheet of paper with different colors on the sides. You can also make a finger ring, shirt and a dime from a paper bill. Children like to create origami animals like a snake, rabbit, frog and a dog face.

Origami covers moving objects also. Action origami can be moved in smart ways. It requires inflation to fly and uses hand kinetic energy to move. Japanese flapping bird was the first action origami that appeared.

To get you started, start with a square sheet of paper. It varies from one project to another. You can make your own sheet of paper or buy sheets at the craft stores. Origami paper is much expensive but will produce better results. If you are using non-origami paper, make sure it is crisp to avoid tearing.

Get clear instruction, one easy for you to understand. Start with simple projects, then work your way up to more complex designs.

Know the basic kinds of folding. It is the basis of even the most complex designs you will encounter. You may not be able to get it in your first try, but be patient. With continued practice, you will become more familiar with the basic folds.

Origami is requires patience, creativity and imagination.

Throughout all of history, coffee houses have been more than places where innocent people like you and I could get a regular caffeine fix.

Although coffee itself apparently originated in Ethiopia before the 11th century, the first coffee house known to history was located in Constantinople in 1475. I know that coffee is an important part of MY life, but in those days a wife could divorce her husband if he could not keep her properly supplied with coffee! In Turkey, coffee was normally brewed in an ibrik, a long-handled pot originally designed for brewing coffee upon the desert sands.

In the early 1500's a coffee house was established in Vienna, Austria by the only person in town who had both lived in Turkey and who recognized the intrinsic value and potential income lurking in several bags of coffee abandoned by Turkish invaders. It seems to be about this time that the custom of softening coffee by adding sugar and cream came into practice. Value was added when coffee shops began serving pastries as well as coffee. Although some pious individuals considered coffee to be the drink of the devil, the pope who was asked to so describe the beverage in this manner was already a coffee drinker and, instead, blessed it, calling it a Christian beverage.

Although coffee houses spread through Europe, England actually got into the act through a Turkish link rather than the import of the new custom from the continent.

It was in 1652 that history records the first coffee house being founded in England by two servants of an importer of Turkish goods. They left their employer and went into business for themselves marketing the new brew at their establishment, The Turk's Head. Coffee houses of this era were referred to as "penny universities" because of the penny that was charged for admission and the camaraderie and exchange of ideas that were included in the price.

In fact, coffee houses of that era were the mass media of the day. The free public exchange of information was actually frightening to those in power. Because of this, coffee houses in England were shut down for a while in 1675. Public outrage was so great, however, that this only lasted a few days.

One figure of note, Samuel Pepys, famed diarist of the era and proclaimed "right hand of the navy" noted that he often frequented coffee houses for naval news as it seemed to be more up to date and reliable than the information available to him at the admiralty. One well known coffee house of the day probably provided him with a great deal of news concerning ships and the sea.

Edward Lloyd's coffee house which opened in 1688 (or 1687, by some sources) near the Thames river on Tower street, eventually lost its roots but became one of the most famous institutions in the world - Lloyd's of London. This was perhaps a natural metamorphosis due to the number of seafaring men from the ships at London's docks who found their way to Lloyd's. Edward Lloyd, being an astute individual, as are all of us addicted to coffee, began in 1696 the practice of listing arrivals and departures of ships in addition to information received from arriving vessels about the conditions of ships and crews and conditions at sea. Eventually, so much shipping information was exchanged at the nearly round-the-clock establishment, that insurance brokers began doing some of their business there.

One of the earliest functions of the coffee houses of the past was to provide a meeting place for many, but particularly for intellectuals of each era. The combination of the exchange of ideas and caffeine proved to be a heady experience, launching careers and in some cases legends. Perhaps you have heard of Jonathan Swift, Honore de Balzac, Alexander Pope, Oliver Goldsmith, or Henry Fielding?

One source states that by the end of the 17th century, there were over 2,000 coffee houses in London alone. Although most were just in the business of serving coffee, some had unsavory reputations and customers, and more than one could have been mistaken for a brothel. They were also often the place for assignations or just plain dates.

It has been said that our modern word "tip" as in "to leave a tip" was first coined (no pun intended) in early English coffee houses. Usually a tin receptacle of some sort was marked with a sign reading "To Insure Prompt Service" (TIPS) to receive the coins of those who needed their coffee and needed it fast!

In the new country of America, the coffee house seemed to follow in the footsteps of its Britannic predecessors. One of the earliest coffee houses in America served as the founding location for the New York Stock Exchange. Of course, after the Boston Tea Party, being a coffee drinker was considered to be patriotic. Many strategies of the American revolution were born or raised in the coffee houses of the day.

A breakthrough in the history of coffee occurred when instant coffee was first successfully produced and marketed by Maxwell House in the 1950's.

Whether instant or brewed, most modern American coffee drinkers would probably not recognize the brew of their forefathers. With a much higher ratio of coffee to water (one tablespoon to 16 ounces of water), and having been boiled for half an hour, not even the introduction of such common additives of the day as fish skin or egg shell would probably have done much to bring the taste close to a modern Starbucks mocha or latte.

In fact, the modern coffee house, typified by Starbucks or Tim Hortons might be recognized by the denizens of the past...if they were able to identify laptops as intellectual tools for research and the exchange of ideas, and cell phones as a means of conversation.

After much success in America, the modern coffee house, in the Starbucks name, image, and mold has moved westward to the East...the Far East, that is. Although coffee was not of much national interest until 1961, by the 1980's coffee shops were quite the rage in Japan, and Starbucks opened its first store in Japan in August, 1996. Starbucks' name recognition seems to have been its ticket to success in Japanese culture. By the time the first outlet opened, world-traveling Japanese had already had the Starbucks experience in foreign lands. The story is told that upon the opening of the first Starbucks store in Japan, the first customer, who ordered a "Double short latte!" did not speak English! As of 2003, Starbucks had 503 stores in Japan.

Starbucks opened its first store in China in 1999, and as of February, 2006, had 165 outlets, complete with cell phone carrying, laptop using customers like anywhere else in the world. I guess it's possible that considering the history of coffee shops something besides coffee might be brewing.

On January 17th, 1995 a massive earthquake hit the region of Kobe, Japan. This quake was unique in that it occurred at the intersection of three tectonic plates. This resulted in enormous damage to the area. Buildings collapsed, roads were destroyed, and utilities went offline for days.

An earthquake will cause damage in two ways. Initially damage is caused as a direct effect of the shift in the tectonic plates. In this incident the shifting plates resulted in ground displacements as large as 3 meters along the fault line. Fortunately the actual fault line did not go through the heart of the port city of Kobe. In this case the direct effect damage was limited to the destruction of underground utility lines, fences, and drainage ditches. The rapid shift in displacement of the ground along the fault line sheared the underground lines like butter, cutting off all major utilities.

Most of the damage caused in this earthquake was the result of the secondary effects of the quake which radiated out from the epicenter. Secondary effects from a quake of this magnitude may take many forms including aftershocks, liquefaction, fissuring, and possibly triggering additional quakes. Wooden houses collapsed from the severe shaking of the ground. Many buildings suffered extensive damage from the 5th floor and higher. This was attributed to the building codes at the time that relaxed the structural requirements of the buildings from the 5th floor up.

The social impact of this quake was devastating. The Japanese had considered themselves to be well prepared for such an event. It was thought that their buildings, mostly made of wood, were better able to withstand the shaking and shearing forces brought on by quakes because of the material's ability to flex, and bend. What they did not count on was the effect that the heavy tiled roofs would have on their structures. The heavy weight of the roof, placed on the lighter wood frame created a whiplash effect that turned these wooden structures into rubble. Making matters worse was the fact that roads where damaged, and those that where not damaged were covered in debris. The rubble strewn everywhere made it very hard to navigate into the area and render assistance, resulting in a much longer and more difficult recovery period. In all, 5000 people died as a result of this disaster.

The economic effects of this earthquake where just as devastating. The clean-up and repair of all the damage cost millions of dollars. Local businesses, even those not located directly in the areas of major destruction, where unable to resume business, as local utilities had suffered major damage and remained offline. In some cases it took as much as 2 months to effect repairs.

The Japanese thought they where prepared for any eventuality. They built their homes and buildings using techniques and materials that they thought would withstand the forces that an earthquake would create. Yet, despite all their preparation and planning, the result was still a disaster of colossal magnitude. Some 5000 people lost their lives; buildings, houses, roads, highways, and all major services where damaged, and tremendous financial loss, and hardship resulted. There is no such thing as being too prepared.

During the beginning of the month of April, HANAMI season comes to Japan. The word HANAMI is literally translated into "flower watching." The flower of choice is the beautiful SAKURA, Japanese Cherry Blossom. If you have ever been to Washington, D.C., or even if you haven't, you have undoubtedly seen photos of the Cherry Trees given to the United States from Japan.

For the next few weekends, every city, state, and national park in Japan will be bustling with millions of Japanese people celebrating HANAMI. To celebrate is quite simple. Here is what you need:

1. A SAKURA (Cherry Blossom) Tree - Space is very limited, and this may actually be hard to find. Most businesses will send an employee out early in the morning to track down a "prime location" for their after work gathering! Good Luck finding a tree for yourself! And ONLY Sakura trees are used!

2. A GOZA (a plastic mat/picnic blanket) - This should be large enough for a group of 2 or more. Never do HANAMI by yourself. You are better off staying at home! The GOZA is used to protect you from the ground, bugs, etc. As always, Shoes are NOT ALLOWED on the GOZA, so take them off before sitting down!

3. OBENTOU (lunch box) - Okay, if you are with a signifcant other, family, or friends, HANAMI is potluck style. So, you need to pack something that you can share with everyone else. If with coworkers, the business will usually buy OBENTOU for everyone, so no need to worry...unless you don't like Japanese food! Some people also have YAKINIKU (Japanese barbecue).

4. OSAKE (liquor!) - Yep! HANAMI is not complete without Japanese Sake, beer, etc. This is a time for Japanese people to have fun, relax, and get a little "red in the face." Oh, and if, per chance, a SAKURA (cherry blossom) petal falls in your SAKE, it means Good Luck for You!

5. KAZOKU (family), TOMODACHI (friends), DOURYOU (coworkers) - These are a necessity for HANAMI. Again, while it is okay to do some things by yourself, HANAMI in Japan is NOT one of them!

Places with large a number of SAKURA trees will most likely have a set up similar to a county fair with numerous places to buy food, gifts, souvenirs, and alcohol. HANAMI can be done during the day or even at night. One of the most beautiful sights in Japan is a Cherry Blossom Orchard illuminated by floodlights in the middle of the night. This is known as YOZAKURA, or "nightime sakura." Be prepared for cold weather, because evenings in April can be quite chilly!

Regardless of whether you you are able to participate in HANAMI in Japan or not, take the time to have a meal outdoors with your friends, family, or coworkers. Step away from the humdrum of life and get outside to enjoy nature. Life is too busy and too short not to learn a valuable lesson from the Japanese people...

Ok, lets clear up some loose ends here. What is the gaijin treatment? Gaijin - non-Japanese person.

Gaijin treatment refers to:
* Being referred to as a gaijin
* The attitudes of Japanese people towards foreign people.

In Japan, foreigners have long been labeled by the term gaijin, no matter how long they've resided within. Literally, gaijin means 'outsider' and derives from 'gaikoku-jin' to mean 'outside country person.'

When '-san' is added to gaijin (gaijin-san) it means Mr or Ms Non Japanese person. It goes without saying that in the west this term would be frowned upon. This kind of language is seen to 'objectify' a person; a big no-no. Aside from that, it can be compared to other controversial terms used for people around the world:

* Gringo - English/American
* Jap - Japanese
* Chink - Chinese
* Yank - American

Racism in Japan is perceived differently to racism in the west, and this is a crucial point. Japan is, perhaps surprisingly, a very racist country, but it's not immediately apparent because of how they express their attitudes.

Attitudes are highly influenced by unsaid rules of social conduct. Racism may be felt, but it certainly won't be explicit (and often physical).

Racism is a very sensitive and conditioned subject in the west. Japan on the other hand has never had to cope with the consequences that result from turbulent issues of ethnicity.

Why?

With their instinctive preference for maintaining harmony, it's not in their nature. The Japanese will drop dead before anything so much as an outburst of foul language. Indifference is virtuous, but karoshi* most certainly isn't.

It's generally 'us' that will take offense, and not the Japanese meaning for it to be offensive. In our culture we wouldn't even consider labelling someone an 'outsider' in racial terms, even though they really are.

That's not to say it isn't used scornfully. Like language in general, it's based on context, and if someone has a reason to dislike you in Japan, it's usually a good one. Some exceptions here are some Japanese seniors who were brought up in an 'anti-foreigner/no foreigner' environment. And perhaps people who live in towns not very popular with 'outsiders'.

Older generations worldwide aren't familiar with countries being so diverse, and likewise all the racial implications we have now. People don't like change, especially as they get older! But unless you move in next door you probably won't hear a peep.

We're not the only ones -

Soto no hito - outsider

There may be a line drawn between the Japanese and the rest of the world, but there's also a separation between native Japanese.

Anyone who isn't immediate family in Japan, for example a friend, is referred to as soto no hito. This isn't used as an alternative to ones name (like gaijin-san), but it does tell us about their attitude to relationships and positions within society.

People are categorised into groups, which is typical for Japan. So when someone refers to a friend as 'soto no hito' it's a statement of their relationship. So what does gaijin-san really mean?

Gaijin is also really just a statement of what you are, a foreigner. Without the underlying 'references' that we are familiar with in the west. Whether the Japanese claim it's a friendly expression or visitors say it's an insulting term, in the end it's not so much the 'definitions' of words that are different between Japan and the west, it's the difference in context.

"Beyond context, the definitions are exactly the same"

Case Study -

I recently heard a story about a friend's sister (both American) who lived in Japan for 2 years with her Japanese boyfriend. During that time the Japanese landlady of where they stayed never bothered to learn her name but learnt his easily enough - again, he was Japanese and she wasn't...

So why is this? I'd like to start a debate here, but I list my ideas first:

Landlady-

* Didn't know how to approach/interact with someone of a different culture?
* Inhibition? - Holding back socially in a Japanese fashion?
* Expectation? - The girl didn't behave 'correctly' and was ignored?
* Resentment? - Dare I say racism?
* Indifference? - Beyond resentment?
* Language? - Wasn't familiar with the name and so either couldn't remember or pronounce it?

I personally believe you'll find it's a little of all of these. This article was intended to give you a little background on a topic that I believe is quite obscure, and often dismissed as a 'cultural difference' that will never be understood. I hope you gained something from it. Happy travels!
